Professional site development

Posted in Career, Media & Internet at 7.39 pm by Caitlin

Right now, I’m knee deep in preparations for moving and planning for a trip to Spain with the in-laws in October.

We saw Man on Wire at the movies recently, which I thought was very interesting. It was inspiring and sort of strange and frightening in equal measure. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this guy before – I wonder if anyone of my parent’s generation remembers him? Especially, since he did it between the pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge before tackling the Twin Towers.

Meanwhile, I’ve spent most of today working on the development of my professional website at www.caitlinfitzsimmons.com. I’m keen to get feedback so please take a look. Is the site easy to navigate? Does it provide all the information you would expect? Does it provide too much information?

Apparently, it’s quite usual to massage the truth on resumés, and I’ve even heard that recruiters and hiring managers take this into account and assume that the resumé makes you sound better than you really are. Maybe I’m being naive but my resumé is 100% the truth. If anything, I’m worried that I don’t sell myself sufficiently to prospective editors? When I was younger, I had to list everything I’d ever done in order to make my CV sound reasonable, but now it’s about selective editing and in some ways that’s harder!

My CV runs to three pages. In the US the advice is generally to keep it to one page. However, UK and Australian books I’ve consulted on the matter say that two to three pages is fine, depending on experience. I’ve gone for a new, simple layout with complete sentences rather than bullet points, which apparently people respond to better. The fashion these days is to tell (true) stories to demonstrate different qualities or experience, but I’m a bit stumped on this.
