  • @oliverthring @chrispople Leaf Phoenix changed his name to Joaquin Phoenix. It’s still an unusual name but less hippy-dippy. in reply to oliverthring #
  • Let me indulge my inner pedant for a moment. Folks, “gifted” is a synonym for “talented”, not “gave/given”. “Gift” is not a verb. #
  • @gospain Yes, I would find it an odd usage to say you were “winded” from running around a tennis court. Perhaps a McEnroe-ism then. in reply to gospain #
  • Ok, I stand corrected. “Gift” IS a verb. It’s a synonym to ‘endow’ so really, should be reserved for big gifts, not everyday ones like pens. #
  • I still don’t know why you would say ‘he gifted me this pen’ rather than ‘he gave me this pen’. It grates. #
  • @gospain I see it on Twitter all the time, talking about books and vegetables and the like. in reply to gospain #
  • @charlieconnelly ‘Incentivise’ is a new word and not one I like, but at least there isn’t a one-word synonym. in reply to charlieconnelly #
  • I’m getting irritated by a fly buzzing around the room. Waiting for it to land on my wrist so I can look presidential with a diffident slap. #
  • @FoodStories @oliverthring: @chrispople @grumblemouse @msgourmetchick Prince Michael II can go for a swim, whereas Wet Blankets are no fun. in reply to FoodStories #

  • George Monbiot on the US Climate Change Bill. http://bit.ly/B5kEP #
  • @evarley That was happening to me too, so I’m looking at Twitter on the web for now. in reply to evarley #
  • I have a brain fart whenever I listen to a recorded telephone menu system – I stop listening half way through every time and need to redo. #
  • How much do I hate Royal Mail’s customer service? I can’t use internet or post office for this task but phone system won’t let me hold. #
  • @Gadling You can select an option to speak to human but if all operators are busy, the call is disconnected rather than letting you hold. in reply to Gadling #
  • @jenniferesque No, because any insulation, no matter how thin or thick, is warmer than no insulation at all. Feel the breeze! in reply to jenniferesque #
  • Yay for the internet and free video Skype, especially when my man is on the other side of the world. #
  • @jenniferesque You’ve obviously acclimatised to British weather. It’s not actually that hot. in reply to jenniferesque #
  • @thursdayb I can see why you’d prefer term Independence Day to 4th of July though many countries have one, so you might need to specify. in reply to thursdayb #
  • @thursdayb Globally people know 4th of July is American Independence Day but if you just said ‘Independence Day’ we’d want to know which one #
  • RT @wendyperrin Not NYC-bound? List of 9 more US cities with upcoming Restaurant Weeks this summer/autumn http://is.gd/1j9iy #traveltuesday #
  • @thursdayb I can see that problem. I think ‘American Independence Day’ covers all bases, unless you’re talking to a fellow American. in reply to thursdayb #
  • RT @emilybell If you shop fair trade but take coke you are a revolting hypocrite says George Monbiot http://bit.ly/19bpmp #
  • My friend @elephantcloud just came home with mini Magnums. Wow, that went down well. Yum. #
  • RT @MatthewWells Former GMG boss John Myers calls for end to radio industry ‘nasal gazing’. Well I’m sure he nose best. (funny!) #
  • I like the idea of #booktuesday from @mikewhills. Recommend a book in 140 characters or less. #
  • The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin. Imaginative science fiction without the genre pretensions. #booktuesday #
  • The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. A powerful reimagining of a different America just a few steps removed from reality. #booktuesday #
  • The Accidental Terrorist by Steven Lang. My uncle’s first novel, set on a hippy commune in Australia in the 1970s. #booktuesday #
  • The Idea of Perfection by Kate Grenville. A touching exploration of human relationships by one of Australia’s best novelists. #booktuesday #
  • Do Good Lives Have to Cost the Earth? Inspiring collection of essays on how to live our lives without hurting the planet #booktuesday #green #
  • @amytropolis That’s high praise indeed! My mother interviewed her once for a magazine, but only over email. in reply to amytropolis #
  • Some interesting suggestions coming through if you do a search for #booktuesday. It’s also #traveltuesday but no reason it can’t be both! #
  • @mikewhills It’s for anything travel related – even travel books! Lots of travel writers and bloggers on Twitter, but anyone can join in. in reply to mikewhills #
  • RT @mikewhills right…it’s a good start to #booktuesday but it’ll take some RT’ing to get it anywhere near a trending topic… #
  • RT @amalchik Suggestion: Write letter of thanks to an author whose book(s) changed your life, or you just really loved. Make it #ltrtuesday #
  • @alaninantwerp Did you go to Rosetta Books? He and his wife Chris started the shop, though they’ve since sold it. in reply to alaninantwerp #
  • @amalchik I loved Animal, Vegetable, Miracle! Actually I’ve never met a Barbara Kingsolver book I didn’t love. #booktuesday #ltrtuesday in reply to amalchik #
  • Lessons to learn by Natasha Judd @tashjudd. Funny and true book about a Kiwi girl who goes to teach English in Korea. #booktuesday #
  • Bah I’ve frittered away my afternoon and now I’m running late for my writing group. Curse of staying in zone 5, outside central London. #
  • Correction: My lovely friends who are showing me wondrous generosity live in Zone 4, not 5, and it’s not their fault I’m disorganised! #
  • @jasminchua If I did that, I would get very fat! (Assuming I ate the dozens of chocolate croissants that I would get every day, that is). in reply to jasminchua #
  • RT @HeatherWilson @lynnmosher: HEY! Everyone: go click on your followers and see if you see what I see! #
  • @girlonetrack I disagree. Maybe I’m thick but I’ve never found how to view followers in Tweetdeck. in reply to girlonetrack #

  • @BlogWellDone Sprite is just as high in sugar as Coke but it’s not caffeinated so perhaps on that front, it’s slightly healthier. in reply to BlogWellDone #

  • @deejackson I wish you well with what sounds like a not-very-fun task. in reply to deejackson #
  • @HeatherWilson Would the sugar water be good for the hummingbirds or would it rot their beaks? in reply to HeatherWilson #
  • Question for Londoners. Is there anywhere I can get stuff shredded? I don’t want to have to buy a shredder but need to dispose of old bills. #
  • @Bookfoolery @Travelwriticus I found that Sound of Music is relatively obscure IN Austria, even though it’s huge in English speaking world. in reply to Bookfoolery #
  • @Travelwriticus Can I answer the question even though I’m not American, please? #
  • @jessicaelgot Congratulations on the job. in reply to jessicaelgot #
  • It drives me crazy when I get notifications that people have added me on Bebo, when I’m not even ON Bebo. Invitation but not worded as one. #
  • @travelwriticus It’s a long-standing joke where I’m from that if you tell an American you’re from Australia, they’d think you meant Austria. #
  • @travelwriticus Australia better known in US now thanks to Crocodile Dundee and Crocodile Hunter, but 20-30 years ago it had grain of truth. #
  • @Travelwriticus I guess the two most well-known Austrians in history often get mis-identified as German, especially the more infamous one. in reply to Travelwriticus #
  • @Travelwriticus In Australia we all learned at school about Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand getting shot in Sarajevo and triggering World War One. #
  • @EverywhereTrip Maybe these days that’s true but it didn’t used to be. We are actually a much bigger country in both size and population. in reply to EverywhereTrip #
  • @Travelwriticus I think Mozart is more famous than Schwarzenegger, except in California, but a lot of people probably think he’s German. #
  • @Travelwriticus I know Schwarzenegger is Austrian but I’ve never associated him with Austria. I think of him as Hollywood star / governor. in reply to Travelwriticus #
  • @EverywhereTrip Sorry, I wasn’t meaning to tell you the obvious, just more reflecting on fact we SHOULD be better known than Austria! in reply to EverywhereTrip #
  • @EverywhereTrip Where have you been in Australia? I’ve not been to Western Australia but I’ve seen quite a lot of the rest of the country. in reply to EverywhereTrip #

  • @EverywhereTrip Ha ha! That’s who I was alluding to before, but I didn’t want to mention him by name in case of dodgy bots autofollowing me. in reply to EverywhereTrip #
  • I love days like today. It’s not so hot that I feel uncomfortable but I do get a lovely, fuzzy bathed by the sun glow. Except on the Tube. #
  • I went for a run this afternoon. The buttercup meadows have turned into purple thistle meadows while I’ve been in Scotland. #
  • @vikkistone Glad to hear it went well. What did they sing? in reply to vikkistone #
  • @ourman I just unfollow them. in reply to ourman #
  • @vikkistone Love Hairspray! in reply to vikkistone #
  • @JuliaCherryPie Cloning yourself would be easier, though illegal and inefficient. You’d have to find surrogate womb, then bring up the baby. in reply to JuliaCherryPie #
  • @JuliaCherryPie I could tell you were seriously considering it and wanted to make sure you’d thought things through properly. ;-) in reply to JuliaCherryPie #
  • @gospain ‘Winded’ is common term in Australia too. More extreme than just ‘out of breath’ eg. if you have breath knocked out from a fall. in reply to gospain #
  • @gospain From dictionary ‘(often be winded) cause (someone) to have difficulty breathing because of exertion or a blow to the stomach’ #

  • Caught up with friend in Glasgow, now catching train back south. powerpoints on Virgin train, though wifi costs. #
  • Been working on laptop but now feel green around gills from rocking train. #
  • @jemimakiss @willwhipple wow you kept that quiet! Huge congrats to both me you. #
  • Rolling green hills and patchwork fields out window. English landscape much different to Scottish. #
  • is browsing Twitter on the mobile web, sitting on London-bound train at Lancaster station. #
  • I’ve had gorgeous sunshine in Scotland but train seems to heading south into deep cloud. #
  • Finally finished Shadow of the Silk Road by Colin Thubron after 2 years. Enjoyed China at start, Iran at end but less so in middle. #
  • Britain is a small island and it’s well connected by rail. Why would anyone bother to fly within UK? #
  • I can’t wait to get my photos from Scotland developed. It feels so weird to be using film again. #
  • Signalling faults on line between Watford Junction and London Euston. Grrr. Bored and hungry. #
  • Back in London. A lot changed while I was away. RIP Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett and Kodakchrome. Congrats @jemimakiss and @willwhipple. #
  • Someone called Billy Mays has also died but I’ve never heard of him so I think it must be an American thing. #
  • The best thing about @andy_murray doing well at Wimbledon is that the Brits can stop pinning forlorn hopes on Tim Henman. #
  • @AnnyChih I’ve never heard of OxiClean either. As I said, it’s an American thing. Or maybe a North American thing since you’re Canadian. in reply to AnnyChih #
  • The hotel soap is breeding! (via @marelisa) http://humour.200ok.com.au/soap.htm #
  • @keithemmerson Um, okay. How are you defining best? Certainly not in terms of ability to win games of tennis and beat likes of Federer. in reply to keithemmerson #
  • I enjoyed Twitter piece by my friend @Sally_Jackson in The Australian’s media section today. Read it on my mobile phone! http://is.gd/1h16c #
  • @keithemmerson Then what is it about? Sportsmanship? Showmanship? Charm? Good looks? I’m curious! in reply to keithemmerson #
  • @keithemmerson I have nothing against Tim Henman but found it sad that every year the whole country had futile hopes he would win Wimbledon. in reply to keithemmerson #
  • @clashcityrocker Alex James was on BBC doco about science of weight loss, in segment about low fat dairy (as if his cheese is low fat!) in reply to clashcityrocker #
  • @keithemmerson Yes, Henman did a good line in being the ‘plucky Brit’. in reply to keithemmerson #
  • My WordPress Twitter plug-in auto-tweeted about a blog post composed mostly of my previous tweets. How self referential / circuitous! Sorry. #
  • @miafreedman @Sally_Jackson Cheques are still de rigeur in the UK. I couldn’t believe it when I first got here! So old school. in reply to miafreedman #
  • I’m kinda sad I never made it to Glastonbury Festival while living in the UK. It’s just so bloody hard to get tickets. #
  • @keithemmerson No, I don’t mean to patronise him. My comment is more about the public’s response to Henman than it is about Henman himself. in reply to keithemmerson #
  • @deejackson Hilarious that you retweeted that! I didn’t actually mean to tweet about blog post composed of tweets. Forgot that would happen. in reply to deejackson #

  • Pausing while my cousin cleans out her boots – she sank knee deep in bog! #
  • Good walk for wildlife. Saw 5 red deer with fawns. Plus a frog and beetles. Gorgeous wild flowers too. #
  • Walked a bit further over the hill and found freshwater high loch ringed with grey stone and peat bog. #

  • Staying in by hostel has many advantages for solo travellers on a budget. One drawback – sometimes you share with a snorer. #
  • The vote is is overwhelmingly in favour of boat trip so I’ll see if I can do that! #
  • Castles are fab but they are plentiful in Scotland. I’m told the Armadale one is standard fare – it just happens so be by ferry terminal. #
  • You guys were too harsh on the bus tour – it’s just a small mini bus and I don’t have my own wheels. #
  • I won’t make outer Hebrides this trip. I need to head south to Inveraray to visit family, then London Sunday. #
  • I must be shedding years on this trip. People keep asking if I’m studying & expressing surprise that I’m married. In general, not just i … #
  • Ok I’m booked on a 2 hour boat trip this morning. Wrong time of year for puffins tough. #
  • On the Brigadoon, heading out to the Sound in hope of seeing sea eagles. #
  • Sea is sparkling, sky is blue, breeze is fresh. Ah Skye. #
  • Boat trip was right call. Already seen pod of common dolphins feeding on mackerel. #
  • Beautiful sea eagle came down to feed. Gorgeous with out-stretched wings. #
  • Glad to see eagle but misgivings about the fact the skippers feed them. Allowed but restricted. #
  • Sitting in Portree Square eating sweet Skye strawberries, waiting for bus. #
  • Fellow bus passenger reading Scottish Daily Mail. Headline – Migrant criminals bringing terror to Scotland. Migrants from England perhaps? #
  • Taking a piece of Skye home – local gooseberry curd and rhubarb, raisin & garlic chutney. #
  • Once I get to Armadale I’ve 4 mins to transfer to ferry. Timetable says connecting service but different company. Hope it waits. #
  • Phew made it. Was pretty sure they’d wait but not much room for error. #
  • Safety announcement in English and Scots Gaelic. They aren’t playing Skye Boat Song though. #
  • Mallaig has the feel of an outpost town, built around ferry and fishing. Waiting for train in a tea room with garden courtyard. #
  • Getting SMS spam about accident compensation. How annoying. #
  • The West Highlands Railway is completely stunning. Taking lots of video. #
  • Seeing ocean, hills, lochs and forest. #
  • Countryside opened up into moors – looks like sheep country without the sheep. #
  • At aunt & uncle’s place in Argyll for few nights. Crescent moon above ridge, pine marten hunting in garden. #
  • If you need costumes or props made, contact my cousin Jenny at http://www.deadbadgerdesigns.co.uk. #
  • She mainly does it for larping but has done theatre props too. #

  • Another glorious day in Skye. I’m going for a bike ride and hill walk. #
  • #lunchtweet Hummus & rocket sandwich. Location – top of Old Man of Storr, Isle of Skye. Beautiful day. #
  • 32C (about 94F) on Skye today. Lovely. #
  • Out for six hours today, cycling and hill walking. I’ve earned a slap-up meal in one of the seafood restaurants on the harbour. #
  • Moving on tomorrow afternoon and taking West Highlands railway, famed for scenery, south. #
  • Still have morning in Skye – what to do? Castles, boat trip, horse riding? #
  • It’s nice to be physically tired. I should have a good night’s sleep as long as my hostel dorm mates don’t snore like in Inverness. #
  • I have been checking email on my mobile because internet is hard to find. Dreading the bill. #
  • Vote on whether I should a) go on wildlife boat trip b) go on mini bus tour to scenic northern Skye or c) visit Armadale Castle. #

  • Hot and sunny in the Scottish Highlands. Ruins of Urquhart Castle against sparkling blue of Loch Ness. #
  • Further still, on horizon, are dramatic blue craggy mountains. It could even be the hills of Skye. #
  • Purple rhododendrons line railway track. Beyond is silver-blue mirror-clear sea loch. #
  • Last two tweets in reverse order. Never mind! Made it to Kyle of
Lochalsh, now onward to Skye. #
  • I made it to Skye! It’s quite close to mainland. There’s a bridge these days – not even a very long one. #
  • I am now at mercy of local bus timetables. Will I make it to hostel on other side of the island or change my plans? #
  • Rolling my eyes at tourist brochure that describes Scotland as ‘a land shaped by geology’. As opposed to? #

  • On the ferry from Burwick in Orkney to John O Groats. It’s a grey old day for the crossing. #
  • Yesterday brilliant sunshine. I found it’s possible to get bad sunburn in Orkney. Who knew? #
  • Orkney Photographic in Kirkwall charged £19 to process 10 films on to CD – bargain! #
  • @mikeachim I am on the Orkney busx as per your suggestion, heading south to Inverness. Sadly it’s grey and rainy. #
  • Passing through North Coast of Scotland near Wick. Looks far more desolate and isolated than Orkney. #
  • On bus south to Inverness, passing windswept moors and abandoned crofts, #
  • This is scenic stretch of northern Scottish coast – at least so I’m told. Could cut fog with knife. #
  • Fog has lifted. Landscape slowly becoming more mountainous are we head towards the Highlands. #
  • I liked Orkney but it’s nice to see trees again. #

  • It’s a shame I won’t be able to get to North Ronaldsay to see primitive sheep who eat kelp from the beach (they rely on the iron content). #
  • Apparently the meat from the sheep has quite a distinctive flavour because of the diet of kelp and grass. #
  • @EverywhereTrip Many B&Bs charge per person as well. in reply to EverywhereTrip #

  • Now at Stromness Hotel waiting for dinner, sipping an Okrney whisky. I prefer brandy but feel obliged to drink whisky in Scotland. #
  • I am reminded once again that I don’t like whisky. So many people rave about it that I keep giving it another chance. I always regret it. #
  • @psigrist I’ve just had some Highland Park. I’m not keen. I can’t bring myself to like whisky, sorry! in reply to psigrist #
  • Planning my Highlands journey for next week. Time’s short so I might have to forego train from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh & Isle of Skye. #
  • I know B&Bs are often a bit ye olde worlde but my B&B in Stromness takes the cake for chintz. I’ve never seen anything like it! #
  • Garden looks like mini golf course but with painted concrete birds. Inside: giant stuffed toy dogs, furry wallpaper, plastic house plants. #
  • This is my third accommodation place in three days. Everywhere on Mainland Orkney is full because of the St Magnus Festival. #
